7 Billion

WHEN: March 12, 2012
WHERE: Earth

You may have noticed I have had a "population clock" on my blog, since last September.  The caption reads "Countdown to 7 Billion!".  Well, at 8:49am(EDT), the U.S. Census Bureau's population clock struck 7,000,000,000!  I kept a close eye on it yesterday, watching it tick within 200,000 of the mark.  I initially thought it would strike 7 billion over night, but it held out until I could get back to a computer this morning to watch the event.

You may have heard on the news that the world population reached 7 billion a few months ago, in October (according to the UN).  While this may be true, I have been basing my countdown on the Census Bureau's population clock all along.  After all, any calculation is only a rough estimate.  Any "pop clock" could be millions of people off, either short or long.  So, for my intent and purposes, the scales tipped at 8:49 this morning.  The world population reached 6 billion in October 1999 and is forecast to reach 8 billion by 2027.
