Rumors, Romance, and Rainbows

WHEN: October 7, 2011
WHERE: Charleston, South Carolina

I'm imagining somewhere in some journalism textbook there is some reference to "confusing the reader with your title to get them to read your material" (then throw in some rhyming/alliteration for good measure).  Enter this post.

I thought I'd share some news from Charleston to end the week with (and perhaps make up for my general lack of blogging as of late).

Stacie called me this morning on her way to work.  She told me she had heard one of the DJs on the radio describe what he said was "the largest yacht he had ever seen" in Charleston Harbor last night on his way home.  The DJ asked his friend, who works down at one of the marinas, what he knew about the yacht sighting the night before.  His friend said the yacht belonged to Will Smith and that he and his wife Jada were signing autographs last night.  His friend said the yacht even had a large crown painted on the side, seemingly confirming this boat belonged to the one and only Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

I told my coworker about this story and he said he thought he remembered hearing something on the news last night about a yacht running aground in Charleston Harbor yesterday.  We both did some quick research on local news sites and all either of us came up with was that there had indeed been a very large yacht in Charleston Harbor last night, but that 1) it had not run aground and 2) it did not belong to Will and Jada Smith.

The yacht, Seafair Grand Luxe, is a $40 million mega yacht and the 4th largest privately owned yacht in the US.  The yacht is 231' long, the same length as a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.  The yacht was commissioned in 2007 and was built primarily to host opulent art galleries on board in coastal communities along the US East Coast.  The yacht was on it's way from North Carolina to Florida and had stopped in Charleston Harbor to escape high seas off the Southeast coast, elevated by tropical systems offshore.

And what was that "crown" the DJs' friend was referring to?  It is actually the outline of a ship and is the logo of Seafair.  Oh how quick rumors spread, especially these days!

Perhaps the Seafair Grand Luxe can be partly attributed to this next bit of news?  According to Wanderlust, a new blog from Yahoo! News, Charleston won the top spot on America's Top 5 Most Surprisingly Romantic Cities list.  Good for Charleston, but...is it just me or does the word "surprisingly" in the title essentially tarnish the accolades given to it for being on the list?  "Wow, these cities are actually romantic!  No one would have ever guessed that.  I guess I always figured they were unromantic. Good thing this list came along to state the claim so everyone knows now."

Yea, maybe it's just me.  But we made (and topped) the list at least!

The final story, unrelated to Charleston, is about, you guessed it...rainbows.  This week, a German photographer captured what is believed to be the first quadruple rainbow ever photographed.  After reading the article, I am still confused about what constitutes a quadruple rainbow, as the photo many (all?) news sources are showing has only two rainbow bands in the frame.  I don't know, maybe this story is rumor.  Maybe it's romantic.

I am failing to see the numerical difference between the two photographs. I don't doubt there is a difference, I just don't get it.

What I do know is that the Green Bay Packers' record is quadruple-to-zero and we're off to see them go five-n-O this weekend in Atlanta!  We wore our Green Bay gear out tonight and the kid working at Dairy Queen complimented our attire and said he is originally from Wisconsin.  Although we'll be in Atlanta, I'm thinking there will be a significant Cheesehead population in town.

Go Pack, Go!!!
